The following pages contain the courses of study that are cited in the California Education Codes. The complete Ed Code can be viewed online at the Department of Education’s website. These are not requirements of BayShore School. These are only guidelines to assist you when developing learning plans for your children. And, to see the vagueness of the actual state requirements for public school students.

Course of Study
Grades 1 - 6

 

The California Education Code section §51210 has stated that beginning in grade one and continuing through grade six, instruction must be given in the following areas:

English
• skills of speaking, reading, listening, handwriting and composition
• knowledge of and appreciation for literature

Math
• concepts, operational skills and problem solving

Science
• biological and physical sciences with emphasis on the process of experimental inquiry
• man’s place in ecological systems

Health
• principles and practices of individual, family, and community health

Physical Education
• emphasis upon the physical activities that may be conducive to health and vigor of body and mind, for a period of time of not less than 200 minutes each 10 school days, exclusive of recesses and lunch (this is about 3+ hours/week)

Fine Arts
• instruction in the subjects of art & music, aimed at the development of appreciation and skills of creative expression

Social Science
Drawing upon disciplines in the following areas:
• history • anthropology • economics • geography • political science • sociology • psychology • history of CA • wise use of natural resources
• roles & contributions of women and ethnic minorities in our society

Alcohol, Narcotics and Restricted Dangerous Drugs (CEC § 51203)
• instruction upon the nature of the above areas as to their effects upon the human system as determined by science.

Personal & Public Health and Safety (CEC §51202)
• to include: “...first aid instruction, instruction in hemorrhage control, treatment for poisoning, resuscitation techniques, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation when appropriate equipment is available; fire prevention; the protection and conservation of resources, including the necessity for the protection of our environment; and health, including venereal disease and the effects of alcohol, narcotics, drugs, and tobacco upon the human body.”

 

 

Course of Study
Grades 7 - 12

 

The California Education Code § 51220 has stated that between the grades of 7 and 12, instruction must be given in the following areas:

English
• skills or reading, listening, speaking, and composition
• knowledge of and appreciation for literature

Math
• development of mathematical understandings
• operational skills
• insight into problem-solving practices
• algebra - as per 51224.5. (b) starting with the 2003-04 school year, students are required to take at least one course, while in grades 9-12, inclusive.

Science
• basic concepts, theories, and processes of scientific investigation in the biological and physical systems
• man’s place in ecological systems

Social Sciences
Drawing upon disciplines in the following areas:
• anthropology      • economics        • geography      • history      • political science      • sociology      • psychology
• resources, development, government of CA & U.S.
• American legal system
• juvenile & adult criminal justice system
• man’s relationship to human/natural resources
• eastern/western cultures & civilizations • human rights issues
• roles and contributions of women and ethnic minorities in our society

Foreign Language (beginning not later than grade 7)
• development of comprehension, speaking, reading & writing skills in the particular language

Physical Education
• development of physical activities which may be conducive to health/vigor of body

Fine Arts
• development of creative skills and appreciation in the areas of art, music or drama

Applied Arts
• instruction in areas of consumer and home education, industrial arts, general business or general agriculture.

Vocational-Technical
• education designed/conducted for the purpose of preparing youth for gainful employment in such occupations ... as appropriate to the manpower needs of the state and the community served and relevant to the students’ needs / desires.

Parenting Skills ( CEC § 51220.5)
• a one-semester course taught in either grade 7 or 8 to cover skills & education with content designed to develop a knowledge of topics including, but not limited to: child growth & development; parental responsibilities, household budgeting, child abuse & neglect issues, maintaining healthy relationships, teen parenting issues; and self esteem.

AIDS and AIDS Prevention, Information & Recommendations (CEC § 51201.5) One semester in junior high & one in high school:
• accurately reflect the latest information and recommendations from the U.S. Surgeon General, Federal Centers for Disease Control and the National Academy of Sciences
• nature of AIDS and its effects on the human body
• information as to how (and how not) the HIV virus is transmitted
• discussion of methods to reduce the risk of infection
• societal views of AIDS

Alcohol, Narcotics and Restricted Dangerous Drugs (CEC § 51203)
• instruction upon the nature of the above areas as to their effects upon the human system as determined by science
• effects of above areas upon prenatal development as determined by science

Personal & Public Health & Safety (CEC § 51202)
• to include: “... first aid instruction, instruction in hemorrhage control, treatment for poisoning, resuscitation techniques, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation when appropriate equipment is available; fire prevention; the protection and conservation of our environment; and health, including venereal disease and the effects of alcohol, narcotics, drugs, and tobacco upon the human body.”

Automobile Driver Education
• develop a knowledge of the provisions of the California vehicle code and other laws of this state relating to the operation of motor vehicles (including the safe operation of motorcycles).
