July 7: Tanabata Festival at the Huntington Library & Gardens (1151 Oxford Road in San Marino). Celebrate the Japanese Star Festival, in a program of songs and storytelling featuring children from the Kodomo No Ie preschool in San Gabriel. According to ancient legend, Tanabata tells the tale of two stars who are separated by the Milky Way , and can only meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month. To mark the happy event, children are invited to write their wishes on strips of colored paper and tie them to bamboo where the wind can carry them to the sky. Origami crafts will also be offered. July 7: First Day of Weekend Watermelon Tours at Tanaka Farms (5380 3/4 University Drive in Irvine). Reservations are not needed. Saturdays and Sundays, tours at 9:30 AM, 11 AM, and 1 PM - please arrive 15 minutes prior to tour time. Take a wagon ride, taste delicious melons. 714/968.6588 or visit the website.

July 8-15: 37th Annual Summer Pro League at the CSULB Pyramid (1784 Palo Verde in Long Beach). Sponsored by Nike Basketball. This annual basketball league is a showcase of NBA and amateur players. Tickets available online or at the Pyramid Box Office. For $10.00/person per day, you can watch seven basketball game starting at 9:30 AM; purchase a season pass at $50.00/person to watch them all. July 12: Family Evening “Campfire” Storytime at the Huntington Beach Central Library (7111 Talbert Avenue, Central Park Ampitheater in Huntington Beach). Listen to stories while enjoying the “campfire” setting nestled among the trees in the park. Bring a picnic dinner for your family! Cost:

July 13-15: 2007 Lotus Festival at Echo Park (Park Avenue, between Glendale Avenue and Echo Park Blvd., Los Angeles). A celebration of the people and cultures of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Festivities include an international marketplace; the children’s courtyard for arts, crafts, and entertainment; food & drink; Taiko drummers; , martial arts exhibits; and dragon boat races. July 13-15: Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center (480 Riverside Drive in Burbank). Billed as the “Greatest Show on Dirt,” the Bill Pickett Rodeo, the nation’s only touring black rodeo, is in its 23rd year. Rodeo for Kidz Sake will take place on July 13 at 10:30 AM: the main rodeo will take place on July 14 at 6:30 PM, and July 15 at 3:30 PM. Rodeo will also visit Hayward and Bakersfield, CA. July 15: Origami Festival at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Gardens (CSULB campus, 1250 Bellflower Blvd., Long Beach). This annual festival is quickly becoming one of the most popular origami arts events in California. Origami, the art of folding paper, continues to be a favorite hobby for people of all ages and backgrounds. The afternoon activities will include hands-on demonstrations, displays, and literature. Hours: 12 - 4 PM. Admission: Adults $7, Seniors & CSULB students $6, Friends of the Japanese Garden Members $5, Children 12 and under free. July 21-22: Ho’Olaule’a 2007Festival (Alondra Park in Lawndale, between Redondo Beach Blvd./Manhattan Blvd/Prairie Avenue/Crenshaw Blvd). Hours: 9:30 AM - 5 PM. July 27-28: Dragon Boat Races at Marine Stadium (5839 Appian Way in Long Beach). Other activites include Chinese traditional art demonstrations, traditional dance and music performances, Chinese Acrobats, and martial arts exhibits. For more information, call 626/288.2888. July 27 - 29: 39th Annual Southern CA Indian Center Pow Wow at the Autry National Center (Griffith Park in Los Angeles). Drumming, singing, dancing, Native foods, arts & crafts vendors, and other family activities. Hours: Friday 2-10 PM; Saturday 9 AM - 10 PM; and Sunday 9 AM - 6 PM.
Adults: $7.00; seniors $5.00; children 6-12 $3.00; children 5 and younger are free. For more information go to the Autry National Center website or the Indian Center website.

August 2007

August 3: 54th Annual Kids’ Fishing Rodeo (Belmont Pier, 29th Street and Ocean Blvd., in Long Beach). Kids (16 and younger) are invited to bring their fishing poles to compete for prizes. June 26 - August 18: Adventure Playground Is Open For the Summer!
Spend a lazy summer day on Tom Sawyer’s island with a zip-lie, rope bridge, rafts, and more. May 8 - September 10: Bodies: The Exhibition at the University Towne Centre (4425 La Jolla Village Drive in San Diego). Features real, whole and partial body specimens that have been metriculously dissected and preserved through aninnovative process, providing the opportunity to view our organs and body systems.
