September 8: 10th Annual 5K and 2k Walk for Animals at Huntington Beach Central Park West (18000 Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach). The Orange County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is proud to present a 5 kilometer and 2 kilometer walk aimed at raising funds to help support their programs. Walk with a purpose knowing that each step is helping fund veterinary care for sick animals, neutering subsidization, feral cat rescue, cruelty prevention through human education and pet-assisted therapy. Well-mannered dogs, on leashes, are encouraged to attend. Unfortunately, no puppies under 6 months are allowed. Hours: 9 AM - 12 noon. September 9: Japanese Folksong and Dance Show at the James Armstrong Theatre ( 3330 Civic Center Drive in Torrance). Time: 1 PM. Tickets are $10. Call the Theatre Box Office at 310/781.7171.

September 14-16: Mexican Independence Day at Olvera Street (845 N. Alameda Street in Los Angeles). Enjoy live music, dancing, and entertainment, as well as carnival rides and much more. If you have never been to Olvera Street on Mexican Independence Day, it is definitely something to behold! However, it does get crowded - so prepare in advance if you are taking children. This event is open from 10 AM - 10 PM daily, and is free to the public. Parking in the area costs, depending on the lot. For additional information, call 213/625.5045. 23rd Annual Coastal Clean Up
Throughout California

Coastweeks September 15 - October 7
Throughout California. Coastweeks is a three-week celebration of our coastal resources that begins on the third Saturday in September. The kick off for the celebration is Coastal Cleanup Day, when 50,000 Californians come together across the state to keep our coasts and inland waterways free of debris. For a list of related events (including hikes, organized clean-ups, workshops, and more) throughout the state, go to the Coastal Commission website.

September 21: A Visit With Great Presidents at Forest Lawn Covina Hills - Church of Our Heritage. History comes alive when professional actors portray presidents such as Harry S. Truman, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and share interesting facts about their lives and times. This event is free, but reservations are required. Book early as these fill fast. Shows: 9:30 AM and again at 11 AM. Space is limited. September 23: Spider Pavilion Opens at the Natural History Museum of L.A. County (900 Exposition Blvd. (between Vermont and Figueroa.). After the butterflies have gone, spiders take over our South Lawn habitat. Curb your spider fears and join us as we welcome our newest exhibit. Watch amazing Orb Weaver spiders create webs, and stick around to see what happens at feeding time! Cost: Adults $3; students and seniors $2; children (5-12) $1. Tickets are sold in half-hour time slots throughout the day. Members receive free admission and the first available tickets. Exhibit ends on November 4, 2007. September 25: Ocean Adventures, a changing exhibit at the Children’s Museum in La Habra. Children will take on the role of conservationists and come to the aid of sharks, seals, sea lions, dolphins, whales, and many other marine species in peril. As they learn what marine life needs to survive and how it is threatened by pollution, over-fishing, loss of habitat, and other human factors, exhibit visitors will appreciate the importance of protecting our oceans and realize that we can all do our part to make a difference. Exhibit ends January 20, 2008. Additional information is available online. Please note that the Children’s Museum will be closed from Labor Day through September 24 for refurbishing.

September 29: Los Angeles Archives Bazaar at The Huntington Library and Gardens (1151 Oxford Road in San Marino). Students, teachers, amateur historians, and others will find a treasure trove of local history at the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar. Exhibits from 40 historical collections and archives will offer numerous resources for exploring the rich histories of L.A.’s diverse communities and virtually any subject related to the region. Time: 10:30 AM - 4 PM. This free event will take place in Friends’ Hall. Additional information is available online or by calling 626/405.2100.

September 30: Fall Reptile Show at El Dorado Nature Center (7550 E. Spring Street in Long Beach). Snakes, lizards, and amphibians on display at this event presented by members of the Southern California Herpetology Society. Time: 10 AM - 3 PM. October 6: Drawing Carnivorous Plants at The Huntington Library and Gardens (1151 Oxford Road in San Marino). Take a close-up look at the strange and wonderful world of carnivorous plants in this botanical art workshop led by Chelsea Dean. Children can sharpen their drawing skills while investigating the mysterious habits of pitcher plants, sundews, and Venus flytraps. Time: 9 - 11 AM. Ages 7 and up, with accompanying adult. Teacher Open Houses

October 1: Museum of the American West, Griffith Park (Los Angeles). Enhance the new school year with classroom ideas from eight great museums while spending time with your family on a day designed especially for you. You and one guest receive free admission to Museum of the American West for the day. Additional guests pay regular museum admission. Hours: 10 AM - 2 PM. October 3: Mission San Juan Capistrano will host its Annual Teacher's Open House for the coming school year in the fall of 2007. Speakers and learning stations will provide teachers with information on making their tour of the Mission more successful and how to engage students in the learning process while at the Mission. This year's Mission sponsored education programs feature extended Mission Matters programming, new Native American education, Discovery Science Center science sessions, and the opportunity for student tours to "Stay and Play" in San Juan Capistrano by booking a follow up visit the Zoomar's Petting Zoo and picnic grounds located in the historic Los Rios District. October 17: The Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach) invites Southland teachers for a special complimentary evening with Aquarium educators to discover tips on incorporating marine science education in the classroom. Teachers will have the opportunity to meet with the Aquarium’s education staff in the Boeing Learning Center and Honda Theater to observe both classroom and theater presentations offered at the Aquarium to advance students’ knowledge of marine biology in a fun and interactive learning environment. The Aquarium will also display the “Aquarium on Wheels,” and discuss this outreach program. Teachers will receive 20 percent off on all books in the Aquarium’s Pacific Collections gift store. Workshops, Conferences & More

Starting Soon! In late September / Early October Fall Parenting Classes at Rolling Hills United Methodist Church (26438 Crenshaw Blvd., in Rolling Hills Estates). Progressive non-sectarian parent education for the South Bay. Classes for parents include: Parenting Toddlers & Preschoolers (5 Tuesdays), Mindful Parenting (4 Wednesdays), and Parenting Your Teenager (5 Tuesdays). Also offered is The Sandcastles Program: Helping the Children of Divorce Rebuild, a one-session program that uses age-appropriate activities to help children (ages 6 through 17) process their feelings and the experience of their parents' divorce. Children attend their own activity groups while parents attend a class focusing on co-parenting skills. Adults and children come together for the last half hour of the program. September 22-23: Whole Parent, Whole Family Conference at the Sacramento Waldorf School (3750 Bannister Road in Fair Oaks). This two-day event offers a number of workshops on family life and alternatives in education. The conference workshops are for adults; young children (infant through 11) may participate in the children’s programs held at the school, for an additional cost. Children 12 and older are invited to help by working in the childcare rooms (pay is available). October 9 - November 13,: Essential Poetry for the Elementary Classroom at the Bowers Museum (2002 North Main Street in Santa Ana ). Practice the art of poetry reading, writing, revision and online publishing for use in your 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms. Workshop instructor Sue Cronmiller holds an MFA in poetry from UCI and is the Founding Director of the UCI Poetry Academy and Writing LAB, as well as the non-profit Poetry Xchange. October 10: Preparing Students for College and Beyond: A Conversation Between Two Presidents at Beckman Auditorium, Caltech. As part of its centennial celebration, Pasadena's Polytechnic School is honored to host Dr. Steven B. Sample, president of the University of Southern California, and Caltech's president Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau for a compelling discussion about the changing dynamics in academia and the best ways in which to prepare students to confront the challenges and opportunities that await them in college. Larry Mantle, host of 89.3 KPCC's AirTalk, will moderate the conversation, which will be followed by questions from the audience. Time: 8 PM. Homeschool News

September 12-13: Aquarium of the Pacific Homeschool Days (downtown Long Beach). While the Aquarium will be open to the general public, no classroom-based school trips will be booked during these days. Ocean related activities, biofacts, and our education staff will be stationed throughout the morning. These engaging learning stations will allow students of all ages to experiment, investigate, and explore marine habitats and concepts. Hours: 9 AM - 12 noon. Cost: $6.00/person (parent or child). Classes for Homeschoolers at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department offers daytime classes specifically for homeschoolers, beginning on September 18. Classes include ceramic studio; drawing, painting and watercolor; beginning and intermediate fencing; piano; and Picasso and Me.
